Frequently Asked Questions

Six adults, dressed in business attire, stand together smiling in front of double glass doors during an About Interiology ribbon-cutting event.

Every project starts with questions, and we think the best client relationships start with clear answers. Below is what we’re asked most often — about how we work, what to expect, and what makes the Interiology experience different. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, reach out and we’ll gladly walk you through it.

Getting Started

Who is Interiology Design Co.?

Interiology is a full-service luxury interior design firm based in Watertown, Massachusetts. Since 2001, we’ve been transforming homes for discerning clients across Greater Boston through our Custom-Tailored Living philosophy — designing spaces that are mapped to how you actually live, not a one-size-fits-all blueprint.

What areas do you serve?

We work with clients throughout Greater Boston and the surrounding suburbs, including Belmont, Brookline, Cambridge, Chestnut Hill, Concord, Lexington, Newton, Wellesley, Weston, Winchester, and beyond. If you’re nearby and unsure whether you’re in our service area, just ask.

How do I start working with Interiology?

Reach out through our contact form or give us a call at 617.741.3131. From there, we’ll set up an initial conversation to learn about your project, your home, and your goals, and talk through next steps.

Do you require a minimum project size or budget?

Interiology is a full-service luxury firm, and our process — from custom cabinetry to concierge project management — is built for substantial kitchen, bath, and whole-home projects. We’re happy to discuss your specific project during a consultation to determine if we’re the right fit.

Do I need to know exactly what I want before we talk?

Not at all. Many of our clients come to us with a feeling more than a plan — a sense that something isn’t working, or a vision they can’t quite articulate yet. That’s exactly what our Discover phase is for.

Our Design Process

What does the design process actually look like?

Our process moves through four stages:

Discover — We visit your home to learn about your needs, your goals, and how you live. We ask questions and truly listen, because the best design starts with understanding you, not assumptions about what should look good.

Design — We create and refine a design that’s custom-tailored to you, walking you through every step hand-in-hand.

Select — We curate furnishings, fabrics, materials, and finishes so you’re never choosing alone, and you’ll see and feel everything in person at our Experience Studio.

Deliver — We coordinate every detail, from engineering to product delivery, working closely with trusted craftsmen and contractors to bring your vision to life.

How long does a typical project take?

Timelines vary depending on scope — a single room versus a whole-home renovation, and whether construction is involved. We’ll give you a realistic timeline specific to your project once we understand its full scope, and we’ll keep you informed at every stage.

Will I be involved throughout the project, or do you handle everything?

Both — by design. We manage every detail of the process, from concept to installation, so you’re spared the stress of coordinating contractors and vendors yourself. At the same time, you’re never left choosing alone: you’ll be walked through key decisions hand-in-hand, and nothing moves forward without your approval.

Can you work with furniture or decor I already own?

Yes. Many of our clients have pieces with real meaning to them, and part of our job is understanding what should stay, what should be reimagined, and what a space needs to feel complete. We’ll talk through this during the Discover phase.

Do you handle construction, or only design?

We provide concierge project management, working closely with trusted contractors and craftsmen to manage the construction and installation side of your project, so you have a single point of contact managing the process from concept through completion rather than juggling multiple vendors yourself.

Investment & Fees

How do your design fees work

All clients work under a Design Services Agreement. Any work related to the design or management of your project — from initial planning through final installation — is billed at a nominal hourly rate. All products specified through Interiology are purchased through us directly, so sourcing, quality control, and vendor coordination stay in expert hands from start to finish. What we can promise is transparency: you’ll know what you’re investing in and why, with no surprise costs along the way.

Is there a fee for the initial consultation?

No.  The initial phone call and site visit are complimentary.

Do you mark up furnishings and materials?

As with most full-service design firms, procurement of furnishings, fixtures, and finishes is part of how we’re compensated for managing sourcing, vendor relationships, and quality control on your behalf. We’re happy to walk you through exactly how this works during your consultation.

What's included in your "concierge project management"?

It means we manage the moving parts most homeowners find overwhelming — vendor coordination, scheduling, procurement, site visits, and communication with contractors — so your project stays on track without becoming a second job for you.

The Experience Studio

What is the Experience Studio?

It’s our immersive design studio, where every room of the home comes to life through fully designed, operational displays — kitchens, baths, living spaces, and more. Instead of guessing from a swatch or a rendering, you can see, touch, and test cabinetry, lighting, accessories, tile, hardware, and furnishings in a real, finished context.

What will I actually see and do there?

You’ll explore fully designed residential vignettes, custom cabinetry and millwork selections, architectural and decorative lighting, stone and tile applications, curated furnishings and textiles, hardware and plumbing fixtures, and art. It’s also where most of our design meetings take place — a welcoming space we come back to together again and again over the course of your project.

When can I visit?

The Experience Studio is open Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., or by appointment.

Do I need to already be a client to visit?

No — the Experience Studio is a great way to get a feel for our work and approach even if you’re still deciding. We’d recommend reaching out first so we can make sure someone is available to walk you through it. Everything in the studio is also available for purchase, so it’s a wonderful resource for finding a gift or a special piece for your own home, whether or not you’re mid-project with us.

Working With Interiology

What kinds of projects do you take on?

We specialize in kitchens, bathrooms, and living spaces, along with full residential interior design — whether that’s a single room or an entire home.

Do you work on new construction, or only renovations?

We work across both, tailoring our process to whether we’re shaping a space from the ground up or reimagining an existing one. Throughout, we work collaboratively alongside the rest of your team — architect, builder, and any other trusted partners — so every part of the project moves in step.

What makes Interiology different from other design firms?

A few things: our Custom-Tailored Living approach, which starts with how you actually live rather than a template; our Experience Studio, which takes the guesswork out of selections; and our team approach, built over two decades, that many clients rely on for years — through new projects, new homes, and changing needs. We’re also proud of our team’s national recognition and industry involvement, including founder Mark Haddad’s role as a Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Designer and NKBA instructor and judge.

How involved is Mark Haddad in each project?

Mark leads the firm and its client-centered approach, and works alongside a team of award-winning designers who collaborate closely with each other and with our craftsmen. Depending on your project, your day-to-day point of contact may be Mark or another member of the design team — either way, you’re backed by the full studio.

Do clients work with you on more than one project?

Often, yes. Many of our client relationships continue for years, across new projects, new homes, and evolving needs — something we consider one of the best measures of doing this work well.
